Hiring a European patent attorney

The EPO examines European patent applications in English, French or German. An applicant with no residence or principal place of business in an EPC contracting state must be represented, usually by a European patent attorney, in EPO proceedings other than filing the application (Article 133(2) EPC).

So a firm abroad usually files and prosecutes through a European patent attorney. This directory lists 336 European firms, ordered by the patent families each shares with firms in other countries. The most active are Grünecker Patent- und Rechtsanwälte PartG mbB, MERH-IP and Hoffmann Eitle.
